Record Frostbiting Numbers - by Claude Chazotte
Winter sailing at MBYC has reached the highest participation so far this century! At mid-point the tally stands at 109 races for the regular season with 26 skippers as well as 30 crew at the helm during crew races. A strong showing of Ideal 18s rivals the traditional Interclub fleet in all respects, along with the brave contingent of Laser sailors. The New Year's Regatta featured 30 races of Interclubs, Ideal 18s, and Lasers. Sailing resumes every Sunday after President's Day.

A Spectacular Fall Series - by Claude Chazotte
In its 34th year, 2012 featured terrific competition on the Sound and Manhasset Bay. Great weather on all four days, an unusual bonus. PRO Sue Miller even commented that she enjoyed only wearing a fleece on just one of the four days! MBFS is fortunate to attract the best sailors in the region, year after year, and the Club is honored to have received complimentary remarks from many racers about the job well done by our RC. MBYC was also well-represented by Rear Commodore Strauch, Bob Schwartz, and the crews of Andiamo and Nordlys. Congratulations for winning the prestegious John B. Thomson Sr. Memorial Trophy goes to the crew of Kincsem skippered by Jeorg Esdorn and Duncan Hennes. Bonnie Doran of the Ideal 18 Fleet won the Black Jack, Alker, and Haney Trophies, and her crew Nan Barry won the Barnard crew trophy. Rick Dominique won the Lure Trophy and the Sonar Fleet. The MBO's were led by Ned Baker and Dick Moore. In the Juniors, Meredith Krim took the Laser Radials and the Fraser and Wicke Trophies and TJ Danilek won the Optimists and the Wessmann and Cornell Trophies. In a special presentation, Pedro Lorson presented Beth Danilek with the Commodore Peter Lorson Memorial Award for her sailing acheivements and contribution to the sport of sailing at MBYC. A special thanks to all who put an effort into the event. With as many as eight races, we have not seen this much good sailing in Race Week in quite a number of years.

Platform Tennis Nationals - by MBYC Member Notice
On March 15-18, the LI Platform Tennis Association hosted the 2012 APTA Men’s & Women’s National Championships. Manhasset Bay Yacht Club was one of the 12 venues selected to hold matches, which also appeared live online. Much thanks to the Hut Captains Mike Ryan and Carole Alexander, and their volunteers Meg Selim, Jan Davenport, Perry Schmergel, Gary Stein, John Kenlon and Kristen Ryan. No one from MBYC took away the trophy, but all spectators agreed it was great to watch. Also known as “Paddle”, this sport is played on the elevated aluminum decks with the wire fencing by the tennis courts. Heaters below the decks melt ice and dry rain for playing throughout the winter. Being active outside in cool weather is a big plus of the sport. The game is similar to tennis and easy to learn. A great sport for the family, and APTA also holds Junior Nationals. Look for upcoming events where you can try it out with a Pro to show you how! If you are interested in learning, men should contact the MBYC representative to LIPTA Mike Ryan at mikeryan17@gmail.com and women the LIIPTL representative Carole Alexander at cmalexan@aol.com.

Ideal 18 Frostbite Letter part.1 - by Angela Pascarella
Dear MBYC member: It is difficult for me to believe that another glorious summer is over. The good news is that the end of summer means that the 2007/2008 Ideal 18 frostbiting season is just weeks away. Ideal 18 frostbiting officially starts on Sunday, November 4th and, weather permitting, will take place every Sunday afternoon (plus the New Year's Regatta) until April. Whether you participate as a skipper, crew or member of Race Committee, frostbiting is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Ideal 18 Frostbiting is now in its third year at MBYC and the new season promises to be very exciting. In addition to MBYC's eight Ideal 18s, we expect to be joined by boats from other clubs so we expect a fleet of 10 or more boats. You must be an active, intermediate, flag, courtesy or winter MBYC member to skipper the MYBC Ideal 18s. There is still time for you to decide whether you wish to participate, but I would appreciate it if you would send me an email and let me know whether you are interested in Ideal 18 frostbiting (as a skipper, crew or member of Race Committee) and wish to be on my Ideal 18 frostbiting mailing list. Those of you who are on the mailing list will receive weekly updates about Ideal 18 frostbiting, boat availability and reservations. The reservation procedure for the MBYC Ideal 18s will be the same as in prior years. Reservations are dependent on boat availability and must be made each week by email to me (syracuse@thshlaw.com). Skippers will not have priority on any particular boat and will not be permitted to reserve a boat in advance for the season. We may go to a system where we draw lots for specific boats each Sunday. Although we will keep a crew list, skippers are usually responsible for selecting their own crew. The fee structure has changed for the 2007/2008 season. The fee for MBYC members and their spouses who want to skipper is $250 per family for 2007 Ideal 18 Program members and $400 per family for MBYC members who were not program members.
Ideal 18 Frostbite Letter part.2 - by Angela Pascarella
Part. 2 For those of you who want to sign up now, I have attached an application form which should be submitted to the front desk. Skippers who don't sign up in advance may skipper three times at a fee of $50 per use and will be automatically enrolled for the season and charged $250 or $400 (depending on whether they were members of the Ideal 18 Program in 2007) the fourth time they skipper with a credit for each $50 single use fee previously paid. Every skipper will be also asked to make a contribution ($75 last year) to the MBYC Frostbiting fleet which will be used for a trophy fund. Information about Ideal 18 frostbiting is posted on the club web page under "Ideal 18 Fleet" and will be sent by email to those of you on my mailing list as the start of the season draws near. Please feel free to email me with any questions that you may have. Regardless whether you want to sign up now or later, please let me know if you are interested in Ideal 18 frostbiting (as skipper, crew or Race Committee) so I can put you on my Ideal 18 frostbiting mailing list. I hope you will be able to join in the fun. Regards, Vince Syracuse Chair, Ideal 18 Committee

Up-Dated Pool Rules - by Angela Pascarella
Grandparents who are ACTIVE or FLAG members paying pool usage dues may bring their children and grandchildren to the pool on Mondays and Tuesdays without paying guest fees. Any Club member paying pool usage dues may bring up to 4 guests to the pool on Tuesdays without paying guest fees. Pool Parties: Our fees for pool parties will be $12.50 per child plus $75.00 for the extra lifeguard that is necessary to deal with children at parties. Please be aware that the Committee also has considered this issue and determined that the burden on the lifeguards while watching the extra children at parties and the cleanup after parties does not warrant the pool being a free venue for such events. This will affect all pool parties going forward and not those already scheduled.
